În cadrul ceremoniei de decernare a premiilor The Game Awards 2014, pe scena din Las Vegas a urcat şi Hideo Kojima, părintele seriei Metal Gear, pentru a confirma includerea unei componente multiplayer în viitorul Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Este vorba despre Metal Gear Online, porţiunea multiplayer a jocului fiind realizată de studioul Kojima Productions din Los Angeles. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain continuă povestea începută în Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, în rolul lui Snake / Big Boss fiind distribuit din nou actorul Kiefer Sutherland.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are la bază motorul grafic FOX Engine, proiectat să ruleze la un framerate de 60 FPS pe consolele de nouă generaţie şi PC. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain va fi lansat pentru PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 şi PC (Steam).
