Halloween-ul este o sărbătoare de origine celtică. Numele de halloween vine de la expresia all hallows’ even, din limba engleză, ceea ce reprezintă numele unei sărbători creştine numită a tuturor sfinţilor ajunul zilei tuturor sfinţilor. Denumirea a fost prescurtată în “Hallowe’en” şi apoi în Halloween.

Ceea ce este specific sărbătorii de Halloween şi cu ceea ce asociem noi tot timpul această sărbătoare este dovleacul cioplit în diverse forme, dar în special în personaje înfricoşătoare.
